In all likelihood, when you woke up this morning you, like me, did so in a home that you own. That is a luxury of which, in the United States alone, over 100 million people can only dream. It would seem that while we are all born equal, we are not all born on equal footing. The American Dream remains but a dream to many.
At the Washington County Habitat for Humanity, we help to turn the American Dream into a reality for our partner families. Through the generous donations of sponsors and the utilization of a primarily volunteer workforce, we have been able to partner with more than fifty Washington County families to help them break the cycle of poverty and begin to build long-term financial security.
By subtracting the cost of labor and receiving loans interest-free, our partner families receive a safe, decent, affordable home and still have money for food, medicine, utilities and the other necessities of life. By meeting all of the financial requirements and putting their own “sweat equity” into the construction of their home, our partner families take a sense of pride in their home that can only be earned – not given.
With fifty homes constructed over our first twenty-five years, our affiliate has earned the right to look back at our past accomplishments with a sense of pride. However, with one partner family taking possession of their new home last October, and three other houses nearing completion, it is clear that our sense of satisfaction in past accomplishments is being dwarfed by our fierce determination to build many more homes much more quickly and, in so doing, help many more families realize the American Dream.
We invite you to join us, and together we will help put that dream within reach of future Washington County families.
